children and is lots of fun. For further details please ring Mary Evans on

VILLAGE
REPORT - KAY DRAKE 522727
Advance notice has been given by the parish council
that the resurfacing of the High Street, from the duck pond to Rye Lane,
is scheduled
for over the weekend of August 9-10. As this work involves heavy machinery,
large tarmac lorries, and very limited access to parts of the High Street,
vehicular access will be even more restricted, so it would be a good idea
to plan visiting the centre of the village on foot. More details of this
proposed work will be provided to all the shops, businesses and houses in
the High Street and will also be posted on noticeboards early in the week
commencing August 4.
This work is obviously more bad news for Otford traders, many of whom do
their best business at the weekend, so please do continue to support them
at this difficult time.
Good news is that every effort will be made to open the road over the
bridge, at the western end of the High Street, as early as possible after
the weekend
of the August 9-10, and certainly by the August 16, which is two weeks ahead
of schedule. |

Otford Folk Dance Club has The Odd Bodds playing on
Thursday, July 31, at 8pm in the Otford Church
Hall. The band will give members
a good
evening of music to dance to, and play some of their own arrangements of
traditional and contemporary tunes. New members are welcome at any time,
all dances are walked through first and called with enjoyment taking first
place over skill. Don’t be put off because you can’t commit to
regular visits, just go when you can. Your first visit is free, including
tea/coffee and biscuits. Thereafter, admission and membership costs £1.50
per week. Details are available from www.myweb.tiscali.co.uk/otfordfdc2
or 01959 522355. |

The bridge works and re-opening of the road at the western
end of the High Street are running ahead of schedule. If all goes well, the
work might be ahead by as much as seven to 10 days. The bridge decking is
in and the contractors are starting to build the new parapet walls, using
the old stones so it all looks the same. The next major works are the burning
off of the old tarmac and the resurfacing, which may take place over a weekend.
Everyone in the High Street will be kept abreast of developments, but at
this stage, the news is very positive - we can look forward to life returning
to normal before the end of August. Please continue to support your local
pubs, restaurants and shops, who are losing out on passing trade. Don’t
forget that the car park and High Street is open, right up to The Horns,
and the bridge work site is well worth a visit to check on progress. |

Aplogies have been received by Otford
Parish Council from Babtie, the contractor of the bridge reconstruction at the west end
of the
High Street. Babtie says it was totally unaware that South East Water were
going to temporarily shut down the water supply to the village last Wednesday,
June 25. It also said it has been told this section of the mains could be
isolated, without the loss of supply to any customers, so it came as a complete
surprise to find there had been a shut-down with a minimum of 48 hours’ notice. |

Listen to Gardeners’ Question Time on BBC Radio
Four (93-95FM or 198 LW) this Sunday (July 6) at 2pm. This is the second
programme
from the recording in the memorial hall in May when Otford
Gardeners’ Society
hosted the show, chaired by Julian Pettifer. Members of Otford, Chevening,
Chipstead and Sundridge Gardeners’ Societies kept team members Matthew
Biggs, John Cushnie and Bob Flowerdew busy with their questions. This is
your opportunity to hear their answers. The programme will be repeated on
the following Wednesday at 3pm.

Otford Primary
School is holding its summer fete
this Saturday at noon. It is always a very popular and fun family event with
numerous stalls and attractions. Make sure you arrive hungry and thirsty
as the barbecue, tea room and beer tent will be too tempting to miss. Dancing
displays and a tug-of-war will keep you entertained and the afternoon will
end with the prize draw. Although part of Otford High Street is closed the
village car park, opposite the school, is still open. |
