VILLAGE
REPORT - KAY DRAKE 522727
Congratulations to the contractors, Otford
Parish Council, Sevenoaks District
Council and all concerned with the completion
of the new
bridge and re-surfacing of the High Street. It was ahead of schedule and
incurred the minimum disruption possible. The parish council would like all
Otford road users to respect the new surface and road improvements and obey
the speed limit, allowing residents to continue to appreciate our pretty
village.
Are the new yellow lines legal? I have been asked. I have been to view
them and they certainly are very narrow compared to the existing lines.
If you would like to comment, do please get in touch.
Please support your local shops, pubs, restaurants and businesses now
that the High Street has been reopened. They have experienced a very tough
few weeks and some are struggling to survive. It has been lovely to be
able to walk leisurely through the village while it has been traffic free,
but local business rely on passing trade. The more elderly and infirm have
also been avoiding Otford since the road works began. Please continue to
shop locally and help village businesses rebuild their trade. |

Despite excessive heat, the High Street was planed
off last Saturday and re-surfaced on Sunday with lining and a skid resistant
surface, either side of the pedestrian crossing, being applied. There is
still some work to complete on the bridge but this should be finished allowing
the road to reopen by the beginning of next week, although there may be traffic
lights on Thursday and Friday. It has been a difficult period for residents,
shopkeepers, pubs and restaurants. The Parish
Council hopes business will
improve when the High Street reopens. The Parish
Council would also like
to urge drivers to respect the improvements to the High Street and restrict
their speed to within the 30mph limit. Otford could still be a lovely place
to live if drivers slow down and obey the speed limit. |

Kay has been approached by the residents of Castle
Cottages with a tale of pigeons and droppings at Otford Palace and what they
say is
a lack of a solution from the district council. Apparently, some of the residents
have spent the last 18 months asking the council to tackle the problem after
Otford Palace was declared a health hazard by the Environmental Health Officer.
Some of the residents of Castle Cottages have young children and say they
are at their wits end trying to resolve the pigeon problem. They have approached
the parish council, district council and every other agency available to
them. They now hope publicity in the Sevenoaks Chroniucle column and elsewhere
will encourage the district council to tackle the issue. |

Ellenor's Open Garden, takes place this Sunday
(August 17) from 2pm until 5pm at 112 North Cray Road, Sidcup. Free parking
is available
in Bexley village centre, about half-a-mile from North Cray Road which is
very busy and not suitable to leave your car in. Number 112 is near the start
of the dual carriageway and the garden offers a unique chance to experience
the tranquillity which lies behind the house as the long garden leads down
to a small bridge crossing onto the banks of the River Cray. Situated in
this delightful setting, almost an island, is a very rare example of a Gothic
style Bath House, circa 1766, and originally part of the grounds of Vale
Mascal. A picturesque place to sit and enjoy your afternoon tea and cake.
Admission costs £1. |
