VILLAGE REPORT - KAY DRAKE 522727
Otford Allotments Association has a very important 50th year ahead in 2004 and hopes to celebrate it by replacing the existing, but rather elderly, equipment shed. There have been many changes over the past year, with some very good gardeners leaving to pursue other activities, or parts of the world, which left some 20 plots to be filled. The site is now fully tenanted with 59 members of the Association, many of them women or young couples, but if you would like to be added to the waiting list please call into the Parish Office or ring Barbara Hine 01959 525468. |

Elidai and the Coal Yard, Station Approach, have been bought
by Laing Homes South East Thames Limited who are contemplating submitting applications
for residential development. This is a ‘brownfield’ site i.e. a site
which is already built on and could be redeveloped. Laing’s have asked
the Otford Society to join in local discussions on what form the development
might take. Among things to be considered are the access from the site onto busy
Station Road, opposite Russell House School, and the extra traffic that will
be generated. Consultations will be in advance of any planning application so
members of the Society have been asked to put their views forward through their
chairman 01959 522709. |

Otford Heritage Centre has a large number of village related
videos on sale which make nice presents both for present, and past, village residents.
A new one added to the list is the ‘Replacement of the Stone Bridge over
the upper cut of the Darent at Otford, 2003’ by Barbara
Darby, priced at £6
and running for 18 minutes. It records in graphic detail the first drill into
the tarmac on 23rd June, through to the resurfacing and restoration of the road
some ten, roasting hot, weeks later. The last ‘new’ bridge was apparently
built in 1732 at a cost to the parish of 12 guineas but unfortunately we don’t
know what this year’s bridge cost. |

estimates indicate that over £1,000 will be divided between the Church and Hospice

of their time. With a suitable script the Community Players might revive but
for the time being they are hibernating. |

A man knocked at a house in the High Street on Monday morning
24th November, produced an empty bottle, and asked the housewife to fill it with
tap water as he was from the Water Board and wanted to test the water. A phone
enquiry the following morning established that no such sampling was authorised
in Otford on that day. The man was white, about 45 years of age, mid-height and
wore a yellow waistcoat. |

Otford cricketers were congratulated last month on finishing
more than half way up the Kent County
Village League table in their first year
in the league. The club finished in eight position but, with only eight more
points, would have jumped to fifth. Steve Ballard, Club chairman, said that the
outcome was highly encouraging and it had been a distinctly good season for the
club. Teams were successful on both Saturdays, and Sundays, and in the junior
section, with several colts making their first appearance in the senior sides.
More details next week. |
