New Year’s resolutions should perhaps include joining
an Exercise to Music class with Otford trainer Joy Watt. Joy offers non-competitive,
low impact, high energy exercise to music sessions with the emphasis on having
fun whilst improving fitness and body shape. Suitable for a wide age range and
most fitness levels, the intensity of the session is developed through depth,
width and speed of movement. No leotards required you just wear whatever you
feel comfortable in and take along a mat and a towel. Joy offers group sessions
at Dunton Green primary school at 7.00p.m. on Mondays and Wednesday and at Farningham
Village Hall at 10.00a.m. on Thursdays. Just go along and join in or ring 01959
525364 for full information. |

Start the new year by making a note to contact me with any details
of forthcoming events that you would like publicised in the Sevenoaks Chronicle
column. If you are part of a village organisation that keeps a mailing list of
people to advise of events then please add my name, number and email address
to your list. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain valuable publicity and
it costs you nothing to keep me informed. I look forward to hearing from you. |

‘Otford– the past in pictures’ is the
title of a 64pp book of photographs of the village spanning the past 140 years
published by the Otford and District Historical Society. The quiet, rural, character
of the village is evident in views taken before the motor car reigned supreme,
though many of the street scenes remain relatively unchanged. The book, priced £7,
is the first in a projected series drawing on material in the Society’s
extensive archive and private collections. It is on sale in local shops, libraries,
and post free from the Otford Heritage Centre 01959 524808 and would make a lovely
Christmas present. |

will take place at 7.30p.m. Sunday 12th December. As in previous years there
will be a mixture of carols, both old and new, from around the world which will

St. Bartholomew's which have been successful and highly appreciated. Admission
is £5, payable at the door, with children under 16 admitted free. You are
welcome to go along and enjoy two choirs rather than one, partake of mince pies
and a glass of wine or fruit juice, and proceeds will be dived between the Children’s

Mike Brown is giving an illustrated talk entitled ‘Christmas
on the home front’ to the 1940s Society at their meeting at 8.00p.m. tomorrow
(Friday) in the Memorial Hall. Mike is the author of a recently published book
with the same title which details how the people of Britain celebrated Christmas
during World War Two. When war broke out in September 1939 it was not uncommon
to hear the remark: ‘It’ll all be over by Christmas’ when in
fact it would be five Christmases before that was true. Summer holidays were
done away with, Guy Fawkes night disappeared, but Christmas remained special
and whatever happened in terms of shortages, rationing, evacuation and the Blitz,
Britain celebrated Christmas. Mike Brown looks at the increasing difficulties
of doing this, and how the people of Britain got round them. More information
from 01732 452505. |
