Otford Gardeners’ Society recent Spring Show was badly hit by the cold weather with many of the daffodils and other spring flowers not being ready to show. However the show was still a great success with a significant increase in the entries for the flower arrangement classes. There was also a good response to the offer of free Marigold seeds for this year’s Junior challenge.

Otford and District Wine Club held a very enjoyable Spring Buffet at the end of March when the members and guests were treated to a delicious supper, prepared by Brenda Montague of Kemsing, and were entertained by a Cabaret which featured some of their more talented members.
On Wednesday 27th April they are having another exciting evening in the Memorial Hall, starting at 8.00p.m. in the form of a Tasting of the wine of the Upper Loire, accompanied by a talk by John Goddard entitled ‘The River Loire – An Unconventional View’ describing the wine, food and geography of the region. John has been interested in wine and its history for a number of years and, although he modestly declares that he cannot be called an expert, he certainly has a unique knowledge of wine and can certainly be described as a connoisseur. Cheese and biscuits will be served during the evening and this event is free to members with guest being charged £3.50 each. You are invited to take the opportunity of sampling some intriguing wine with friends and the guarantee it will be good fun. Further enquiries to 01732 761359.

The 1940’s is the title of Vincent Senatore’s talk tomorrow (15th) at 8.00p.m. in the Memorial Hall. Vincent was just 16 when war broke out in 1939 and by the end of the war his life had changed forever. He was an under-age ARP warden in South London, called up into the 8th Army, torpedoed on a troop ship, invaded Italy, injured in Monte Cassino, and sent to Greece at the end of the war. Just some of the highlights of what is sure to be a fascinating evening and a rare opportunity to hear the experiences of a world war two veteran. Not to be missed. Everyone welcome, admission £2 or further details from Ian 01732 452505.
