As part of the national ‘Pray Without
Ceasing’ year
that has now begun there will be a 24/7 style Prayer Room in the Methodist Hall
on Saturday August 20th beginning at midnight of the Friday night for six hours
until 6.00a.m., followed by a simple breakfast. Village groups are invited to
send in prayer requests to Kath on 01959 522196 by Sunday August 14th. You are
welcome to go along and pray using the interactive prayer activities at anytime
during that period and there will be a reminder in this column on Thursday 18th
August but please make a diary note now. |

12.00 noon. Bring your own picnic and drinks for a day out with friends. Meet
under the large oak tree 100 yards west of the main entrance. Car parking at

Otford Folk Dance Club have ‘The
Motley Set’ playing
tonight (Thursday) in the Church Hall from 8.00-10.00p.m. with Janette Peters
calling and, as usual, everyone is welcome. Your first visit is free and thereafter
it will cost you £1.50 per night, including tea/coffee & biscuits.
As usual there will be a wide selection of dances covering Folk, Square and Barn
Dances of English, American, Scottish and Irish origin and all dances are called
and walked through first. |

Victory Tea party to celebrate VJ day will be held in
the Memorial Hall from 3.00-5.30p.m. on Saturday 13th August. Please take along
wartime memorabilia for the display table and if possible wear 1940’s dress.
Tickets cost £2.50
each or £6 per family and are available from the parish council office
01959 524808 or from Marian Wills 01959 522856. Proceeds will go to the Royal
British Legion. The Heritage Centre also has a VE Day display, put together to
celebrate the end of the war in Europe, and there are numerous interesting items
to see and read. |

Flourishing Otford cricket
club is looking for a regular
umpire for the first division of the Kent County
Village League. The club, which
now fields two senior sides and several youth elevens, has league fixtures on
some of the most beautiful village grounds in Kent and and Sussex, like Penshurst
Park, Groombridge, Sissinghurst and Outwood, and coaches a hundred young players
at Otford recreation ground on Sunday mornings. Applicants will have a good knowledge
of the laws, and preferably some experience of playing village or club cricket,
perhaps a retired player, and should contact first team skipper Mark Stevens

At the recent AGM of Girlguiding
Kent West the County Commissioner,
Daphne Stearn, presented awards, consisting of a certificate and brooch, to Otford
residents Jane Lawrey and Hilary Towers to mark the completion of their thirty
years’ voluntary service as Guide Leaders. The village adds its congratulations
and warmest thanks. |

Otford Primary School is holding its Summer Fete this
Saturday (9th) from 12.00 noon. This is always an immensely popular event with
lots of excellent stalls and attractions. There will be dancing displays, football
matches, a tug-of-war, inflatable assault course, mega slide and bouncy castle
for entertainment and the tea room, BBQ, beer tent and strawberries and cream
will be too tempting to miss. Entrance is 60p. per adult, children free. Go along
and join in the fun. |

designer Tony Smith to create a sculpture of the Greek goddess Athena for display
in his garden at the Hampton Court Flower Show 5th – 10th July. A replica

Gardens’ has unearthed any hidden gardeners who may not have sufficient
room in their garden at home to ‘grow their own’ but may like to
