Worlds'’ biggest coffee morning in aid of MacMillan Cancer Relief is being held in the Church Hall between 10.00a.m. and 12.30p.m. Saturday (1st). The entrance fee of £1 includes coffee and biscuits and there will be a cake stall, bric-a-brac, and a raffle. If you are unable to go along any donation would be welcome. Otford's 2006 village fete is already in the planning stages and an open meeting to discuss and build on this year’s successes, and invite contributions of ideas for next year, is being held at 8.00p.m. in the Hope Room of the Memorial Hall on Monday 17th October. If you are new to the village and would like to get involved, or if you think you could spare some time to help with the organisation in advance, or on the day, then please go along. All profits from this event go to support local projects, people and charities.

Trafalgar Remembered on Saturday 22nd October has proved so popular that all but a few tickets remain. If you would like tickets then please telephone the box office 01959 522709 as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Also on Saturday 22nd you can visit the exhibition of marine paintings in the Parish Church Hall which will be open between 10..0a.m. and 4.00p.m. and view Otford’s depiction of Turners ‘Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar’. This has been painted in squares by quite a number of local artists and those following Rolf Harris on the television can see Otford’s portrayal.

Otford Gardeners’ Society will hear Nick Robinson, head gardener of Yalding organic garden give a talk entitled ‘Organic Gardening’, encompassing all aspects of organic gardening, at their meeting in the Memorial Hall at 8.00p.m. Tuesday 4th October. Tickets for the Scouts fund raising Quiz Night Saturday 8th October in the Memorial Hall, are still available at £5 per person by ringing 01959 525413. Proceeds from this event will be used for the refurbishment of the Scout Hut which is used by the local Beavers, Cub Scouts and Scouts at their weekly meetings.

Support your local Otford Scouts group by organising a table of 6 at their fund raising quiz on Saturday 8th October in the Memorial Hall £5 per person. If you can’t get a table together you will still be welcome just ring 01959 525413 for details. Fund raising is continuing for the refurbishment of the Scout hut and this promises to be an enjoyable way of supporting our local young people.

Dave Birchall our community police support officer is organising a friendly football match and wants to hear from you if you play football and are aged 14 years+. The village team will play against a side from the Kent Police kicking off at 1.00p.m. on Sunday 2nd October on the Recreation Ground. Players need to supply their own kit although printed slips will be provided to wear over the top. This promises to be a great fun event so please ring Sue at the Parish Office 01959 524808 giving your name, age, contact telephone number and which position you prefer to play.

Otford and district wine club is holding a ‘Wine Tasting Quiz’ starting at 8.00p.m. on Wednesday 28th September in the Memorial Hall. Laurie Young, their Treasurer, is setting the questions and it promises to be an interesting and enjoyable evening. Otford Oast WI are looking forward to Mike Baldwin of Marks and Spencers, Bluewater, food presentation and sample tasting this morning, 15th, at their meeting in the memorial hall at 9.30a.m. There is a free crèche for the younger children and tea/coffee is available. You are invited to go along and see what is new at M&S foods and to ask any questions you may like Mr Baldwin to answer. Amherst Rotary Club are raising funds for Hospice in the Weald and MacMillan Cancer Care at their Cyclo Sportive 2005 event taking place on Sunday 18th September. This commences at 7.30a.m. with registration at Sevenoaks Prep School, Godden Green followed by the start at 9.00a.m. All the money from the £25 entry fee and any sponsorship goes to the charity and they hope to raise about £20,000 this year, so extra riders are always welcome. There are two routes of 80km and 140km and further information is available from 01959 522148.

Otford Folk Dance Club meet every Thursday in the Church Hall from 8.00-10.00p.m. and dance a wide selection of folk, square and barn dances of English, American, Scottish and Irish origin. Your first visit is free and thereafter it will cost you £1.50 per night including tea/coffee and biscuits. All dances are called and walked through first and visitors are made very welcome. Coffee is served every Saturday morning in the Club Room of the Memorial Hall between 10.30 and 12.15 and the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. If you are new to the village this is an ideal place to call in for a chat with some of the regulars and to find out just what goes on in Otford. There is a list of at least 45 societies that meet regularly in the hall and you might like to join one.

PARISH COUNCIL - SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER
The September edition of the newsletter is now on-line with news of future events, including: Do you like football? If you do, you live in the village, are male and aged 14yrs + please come and make up a team to play a friendly match against a side from Kent Police. This will take place on Otford Recreation Ground on Sunday 2nd October kicking off at 1pm. Tuesday 11th October come and see 'Hell & High Water', an Applause Production in the hall at Otford Primary School. Contribute your ideas on how the 2006 Otford Fete can build on the success of previous years events at the Open Meeting on 17th October, come along to 'Trafalgar Remembered' on 22nd October. News too from the many village clubs and societies and the latest planning applications.

Tanya is starting Circuit Training Fitness Classes between 7.30-8.30p.m. each Tuesday starting 13th September at Sevenoaks Community Centre, £4 per session. Circuit Training is open to men and women of all abilities, ages and fitness levels and she would particularly like to encourage beginners to join. It is lots of fun and general nutrition and weight management advice is also available if required. Wear loose, comfortable, clothing and simply turn up or ring 07956 168898 for further information.

St. Bart’s super summer sale in aid of the ‘Building-on Fund’ on Bank Holiday Monday was a great success raising over £1400 for the fund. The organisers would like to thank all those who participated both buying and selling and encourage you to support forthcoming fund raising events both large and small in order to raise the necessary money for the church improvements. New architect, Roger Joyce, is making progress on work relating to the plans drawn up by Jim Lidbetter and it is hoped to go to tender in the Autumn and begin work in early January. Future fund raising events include a concert given by ‘Cantate’ on the evening of Saturday 22nd October and the Christmas Market on the first Saturday in November.

Otford Gardeners’ Society Autumn Flower and Craft Show will be held in the Memorial Hall this Saturday, 10th, between 2.15 and 4.15p.m. Vegetables, late flowers, photography, flower arrangements, handicrafts, art, cookery and junior classes will all be featured and admission is 50p. with under 16’s admitted free. Refreshments will be available and parking is free in the village car park.

If you missed the Citizens Advice Bureau’s surgery at the school house on September 6th then you have the opportunity to catch up by attending the Otford Afternoon WI’s meeting at 2.00p.m. in the Memorial Hall on Tuesday 13th September when members will hear all about the CAB from their speaker. Please contact 01959 522915 for more details. This WI meet on the second Tuesday of each month, membership if £21 per year, and tea at the meeting is 30p.

The September edition of the Parish Magazine is now on-line, including news on church services and events in September: Kent Churches Sponsored Bike Ride, FEBA Sunday, Marriage Thanksgiving at Rochester Cathedral and Poverty and Hope Sunday. Congratulations to Hugh Thomas, who is to be ordained Deacon at Rochester Cathedral on Saturday 10th September. He will serve his curacy at St Margaret’s Church, Halstead and St Katharine’s Church, Knockholt. News too from the many village groups and organisations.
