RADIO, Residents Against Development in Otford, are holding their inaugural meeting on Wednesday, 9th November at 7.45p.m. in the Memorial Hall. You are invited to go along, membership is free, and hear how this community committee are going to fight major development in Otford. Their first campaign is to prevent the development of the site at 64/66 Well Road and Laing’s three applications to build there. Urgent Plea: In an attempt to supply pictorial evidence to the forthcoming enquiry into the planning appeals by Laing’s on the Well Road site RADIO urgently require volunteers who would be prepared to sit at the junction of Bubblestone and Sevenoaks Road (by the Parade) and video traffic movements at ‘peak times’ on weekdays before 11th November. Otford folk dance club meet tonight in the Church Hall to dance a range of folk, square and barn dances of English, American, Scottish and Irish origin with Carol Hewson calling. Carol is well known to the club and an excellent caller and you are invited to go along at 8.00p.m. for a first night free visit, thereafter paying just £1.50 per night including tea/coffee and biscuits.
Metric Foot, a nationally known band from Maldon, Essex, will be playing for the clubs dance in the Memorial Hall on Saturday (29th) from 8.00 to 11.00p.m. Sarah, who also plays the concertina, will be calling for this ‘big band’ consisting of four other members playing the fiddle, guitar, drums and an accordionist. Tickets cost £6.50 from Joan 01959 524609 or £6.50 on the door and there will be an American supper, please take along finger food to add to the buffet.

Otford Methodist Church is holding an Autumn sale, coffee shop, and car wash this Saturday (29th) between 10.00a.m. and 12.00 noon in their church hall. There will be a wide range of stalls including Traidcraft food and Christmas cards all in aid of the church hall building fund.

Station news includes the appointment of a new clerk – Tim – for the booking office which should be open for almost normal hours for the foreseeable future. The foot crossing to the South of the station which has been in poor condition for many months, despite weekly complaints by the Parish Council to South East Trains and Network Rail, has now been adequately repaired but please take care with the different levels of the decking.

Otford Allotments Association are holding their AGM at 9.30a.m. this Saturday (29th) in the Memorial Hall which is a great opportunity to go along and meet allotment gardeners and find out what is involved. There are a couple of allotments available at the moment to rent so you are invited to go along on Saturday when you may be tempted to join.

Glaucoma coffee morning Friday 4th November in the club room of the Memorial Hall will hear Mrs Annette Ray, DBO, who is orthoptist at Sevenoaks Hospital talk about this eye condition that affects about 1 in 100 people over 40 in the UK. Two‘Trafalgar Oaks’ will be planted by Otford children at 2.00p.m. on Friday 21st October on the Palace Field. The oaks have been purchased by the Otford Society as part of their sponsored weekend of Trafalgar commemorations which consist of the art exhibition of marine paintings by local artists in the church hall from 10.00a.m. and the community celebration ‘Trafalgar Remembered’ in the Memorial Hall (now sold out) on Saturday 22nd October. The society has also purchased and donated to the memorial hall a set of exhibition display stands which will be available for hire to other village organisations.

Otford Oast WI meet this morning (20th) in the Memorial Hall at 9.30a.m. to hear Derek Hodge, an auctioneer with Ibbett Mosely, Sevenoaks, talk on auctioneering and valuation experiences and offer a few tips on buying and selling antiques. He will bring along a few items to illustrate his talk and advise on current trends. All are welcome and a free crèche is available for the younger children.

The Kirsch Cup will be awarded to the winner of the evenings Pudding Competition and attendees will have the opportunity of sampling and judging the entries. RADIO, Residents Against Development in Otford, a community committee has been set up by two local residents to fight major development in Otford and their first public meeting will be held in the Memorial Hall at 7.45p.m. on Wednesday 9th November. They would like to invite villagers to go along, accept free membership, and hear their purpose and aims. The main purpose of this meeting is to recruit as many members as possible from the village in order to become a genuine community pressure group ready and willing to fight all unpopular development in the village at local, council and governmental levels. Otford & district wine club are holding their AGM and buffet on Wednesday 26th October at 8.00p.m. in the Memorial Hall when subscriptions for 2006 will be payable. As usual it is the clubs intention to dispose of the business part of the meeting as quickly as possible so that the cold buffet supper may be enjoyed. Wine will not be supplied for this event due to the lower than expected takings at the Ice cream stall at the fete, which was badly affected by a storm, so you are requested to bring your own liquid refreshments. There will be a Pudding Competition this year and the Kirsch Cup will be awarded to the winner. You are invited to go along even if you do not wish to enter the Pudding Competition as everyone present will sample the entries and judge them.

Barbara Darby, our local village videoist, was again successful at this year’s Kent Film Festival held recently at Canterbury. Her latest video ‘The Vanished Palace of Otford’ won the Laser Rush (sponsors of the festival) Kent Trophy for the best entry about Kent. This video is available from the Heritage Centre for £6.50.

Worlds’ biggest coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief held by Chris Brauns at her home last Friday, 30th September, raised an amazing £575 for this very worthwhile cause. Chris would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped and supported this event including the Inner Wheel Clubs of Sevenoaks and Amherst, members of the Methodist church and friends and relatives.

Otford Primary School will host a performance of ‘Hell & High Water’ at 7.00p.m. Tuesday 11th October with the senior class also attending workshops during the afternoon. You are invited to go along, tickets from the Parish Council Office £5 adults, £4 concessions, and £3 children, to cheer the hero, hiss the villain and enjoy this antidote to living history.
