Proceeds from the sale of a new booklet entitled ‘Tales
from Otford’ by Brian Raynor is just one of the continuing fund raising
projects for the St. Bart’s Building On Fund. Some of the tales concern
Otford Palace and the early years of the Tudor Reformation and other, more recent,
ones include two brothers of the old Polhill family of Otford. The booklet costs
just £2.99 from Otford Heritage Centre, Sevenoaks Bookshop and Otford Post
Office. The £10 money bags were also used very imaginatively to raise a
clear £1850 profit for the fund and the fundraising team are also now concentrating
their efforts on Charitable Trusts as a source of income. Thanks go to all participants
so far.
Work has started on the new building and great care is being taken that
this causes a minimum of disruption to both churchgoers and the village in general.
The graves and the trees on The Green have been safeguarded and the whole site
is well screened. |

Otford Evening WI enjoyed a detailed and fascinating talk
at their June meeting by Mr. Wells of Canine Partners. He explained how dogs
are trained to help people live a normal life when they find it difficult to
cope with everyday tasks by themselves. By fixing a cord to items such as cupboard
doors, curtains, light switches, fridges etc. the dogs are able to perform tasks
on command such as opening a door and putting on a light as well as being able
to retrieve remote controls for electrical items such as TV’s. Their next
meeting is on August 10th at 7.30p.m. in the Memorial Hall and their speaker
will talk on crime prevention and explain ‘How not
to become a victim’.
Visitors are always welcome to go along for an introductory session which it
is hoped will lead onto membership. Contact number 01959 522981. |
