Harvest Thanksgiving will take place at Otford Methodist
Church this Sunday, October 1st. The 10.30am service will give
an opportunity to remember our blessings and also learn about water projects
in Tanzania. The service will begin with all age worship and then young people,
children and crèche
go to their own groups. At 6.30pm you are invited to the Cafe evening. Coffee
and apple pie will be served as the theme "What water shortage”? is
explored in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Just go along or ring Kath (522196)

biggest coffee morning takes place in Otford Church

Support Sevenoaks
Playhouse. The coffee morning and bring-and-buy
sale in Otford recently to raise funds and support for a revived Sevenoaks Playhouse
(otherwise the Stag) raised more than £200 and is to be followed by other
fund-raising, including a curry night at the Banana Leaf at 47 Bethel Road, Sevenoaks,
on October 10 and a dinner, with jazz, at the Brasserie
St. Nicholas on November

District Council has said it wants to reopen the theatre as soon
as possible and enthusiasts are hoping that it might be possible to stage a Christmas

Evening on Wednesday 27th September in the Memorial Hall run by a true connoisseur
of the golden liquid, Peter Boyd-Barrett. The evening begins at 8.00p.m. with

Otford Evening Women’s Institute heard Tom
Hart-Dyke
from Lullingstone talk about his background and the preparations he made before
his world travels to collect rare and beautiful orchids, prior to his 9 months
captivity by terrorists in the forests of Panama and Columbia. During this time
he planned the World
Garden which he has now opened in the grounds of his home
Lullingstone Castle. The AGM will be held at the October meeting with the election
of committee and president. |

Building work has started on St. Bartholomew’s
Church and every care is being taken to ensure the least possible disruption
to traffic on the roundabout, the safety of pedestrians and to ensure the site
is secure and tidy. It is expected that work will be completed in April next
year and the Bishop of Rochester will open it in May. Fund raising continues
for this project and the Summer sale raised £1,300 with thanks to all those
who helped and contributed in any way. |

The Maunsell Sea
Forts - An Illustrated History (Event
Flyer) Built during the Second World War
the Maunsell Sea Forts in the Thames Estuary have had a fascinating history.
Built at great expense to defend Britain against German attack they have since
been abandoned, used by radio pirates, television producers and even declared
as independent nations. Frank Turner, author of over 60 books, will be giving
an illustrated talk on the origins of the Maunsell Sea Forts in the Thames Estuary,
their wartime activities, postwar use by the radio pirates and the work to restore
the red sands army sea fort which was started in 2004 and is progressing well.
Come along to what will be a fascinating evening. Friendly meetings learning
more about life in the 1940’s.
Meetings start at 8pm at Otford Memorial Hall, Nr. Sevenoaks.

Otford residents are being asked to back the revival of
the Playhouse in Sevenoaks. Against a background of considerable public support
for the restoration of the theatre, supporters are to hold a coffee morning on
Tuesday 12th September in the Memorial Hall Club Room between 10.00a.m. and 12.00
noon to tell people about the campaign to save the theatre and cinema. You are
invited to go along, enjoy a cup of coffee with friends, and talk about your
opinions and ideas for the new project. There will be a bring-and buy sale, a

that we have had a good summer with a very successful BBQ in June and a very
enjoyable outing to see ‘Oliver’ in August. However, although the

on Sunday 3rd September on the theme of ‘Growth’. News too, from
'First Steps', a welcome to our new Pastoral Assistant, Margaret Lidbetter
and details of 'Back to Church Sunday' on the 24th September. The Kent Churches’ Sponsored
Cycle Ride takes place on Saturday 9th September. News also from the many
