Otford Evening WI heard all about "Life in the Workhouse" during the 19th century from Helen Allinson at their recent meeting. She described a life of meager wages, ill health and the end of parish relief meant that going to live in the workhouse (or union as it was known) was an ever present dread to agricultural workers and their families in Kent.
On September 9 Kenneth Tappenden will be recounting the "Perils of a Toastmaster" and you are welcome to go along and join them in the Memorial Hall from 7.30pm.
Saturday October 2 is the date of their annual Boot Fair which gives you enough time to make that big effort to have a clear out and dispose of unwanted items. A stall costs only £8 so ring 01959 525468 to reserve one. For the bargain hunters the doors will open at 9.30am, admission is 50p, children free, and there will coffee, tea and delicious home-made cakes on sale. |
