Otford Evening WI heard from Stuart Robinson, a London guide, about the Curiosities of the City of London at their meeting on October 14. Starting with the Great Fire of London he took them on a journey full of interesting information which included the provision of the first drinking water fountains, the minor crimes which took the prisoner to Newgate Prison and to public hangings at Tyburn. He ended by explaining the origins of some of our everyday phrases - On the Wagon, One for the Road - and the origins of old London street names. Their next meeting is on November 11 at 7.30pm which will be in the Club Room and the speaker, Malcolm Jones, with talk about Theatre Museums. This is an active and friendly institute and visitors are always welcome. |
