Club Newsletter – April 2013

Welcome to the first Newsletter of 2013

Welcome to the first newsletter of the new tennis season; I trust it finds you well and keen to dust off your racquet and ready to play. Firstly let me introduce myself, my name is Ita Murphy, I have been a member of Otford tennis club for a couple of years (you’ll spot me on the court as I’m always on the losing side); fortunately talent wasn’t a prerequisite for this role!

I have taken over the role of Club Secretary from Julian who has generously given his time to the club in this capacity for a number of years. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Julian for all his hard work on behalf of the club. That said, Julian will remain an active member of the tennis committee.

Wimbledon Ballot draw May12th -Fun Tennis event for members and non-members

There will be a fun tennis event at the club on May 12th to coincide with the ballot for Wimbledon tickets. The event will take place between 9.30am -12.30pm. It is open to all members and non-members of every age. If you know anyone interested in having a fun morning playing tennis, do encourage them to come along and take part…the more the merrier

Please note the ballot is for Junior and Adult members only. If you want to take part in the ballot, your renewal form must be received by Alison Dykes by May 10th latest (see below for more details)

Julian will soon be sending out an email explaining the new methodology regarding the allocation of Wimbledon tickets. It’s important you look out for this .

Membership renewal

Subscriptions for the new 2013-2014 season are now due and should be sent to Alison Dykes by May 10th (at the very latest) to ensure inclusion in the Wimbledon Ballot. Alison’s contact details are: (01959 – 522050 / AlisonD@OtfordTennis.org.uk).

Please download and complete the 2013 Membership Renewal Form (PDF).  The renewal form also includes tick-boxes to indicate whether you would like to enter the ballot for Wimbledon tickets, and whether you would like to enter the adult club tournament. More details on both these events will follow

Spring club sessions

Tuesday and Thursday evening ( 7.30-9.30pm) and Sunday morning (9.30am-12:30pm) club sessions have been running throughout the winter whenever the weather has permitted (at times we have been so wrapped up with hats, scarves and gloves we could barely swing a racquet). Now the lighter evenings are with us, we’d love to see more of you come along,. These are session for adult players of any standard with either Full, Student or Family membership. The Tuesday and Thursday sessions are 7.30 – 9.30pm, Sunday is 9.30am until around 12:30pm. As the weather is still rather erratic it’s good to check that it’s going ahead as usual – drop an e-mail to IsTennisOn@OtfordTennis.org.uk if you’re thinking of coming along, and one of the regular players will get back to you to confirm whether play is going ahead.

Coaching sessions

There will be Junior and Adult coaching sessions as usual this spring. Please see the Coaching page for further details.

Working party

The club is in urgent need of a spring clean and as such we will be hosting a working party on Sunday April 28th from 9.30-11am . Irrespective of which day you usually play, please do come along and help out with a spot of DIY, grass cutting or light cleaning duties. We hope to entice you with the promise of some tea and cake!

Inter-Club Tournament

We are exploring the idea of holding a friendly inter-club tournament with one of the village clubs. If you are interested could get in touch with David Fordyce to enable us to gauge number. David’s details are as follows: davidfordyce@btinternet.com

Otford fête – May 27th

As usual the club will have a stall at the village fête this year. We’re always keen for help manning the stall, we just need an hour of your time- it’s quite fun. Please let Ita know if you are happy to help out.

That’s it for now, we do hope to see as many of you as possible down at the club in the very near future.

Ita Murphy (Secretary)
